My name is Emily Townsend, and I’m a senior news reporter and gold standard multimedia journalist.
Currently, I am chief reporter at two of Britain’s biggest and best-selling regional newspapers, the East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star.
I was promoted to this position just a month after becoming a senior reporter and achieving two distinctions in my NQJ exams. I regularly run the daily news operation, alongside carrying out major campaigns and investigations for our websites and print publications.
I trained at the UK’s top journalism school, News Associates, and received a gold standard diploma along with 100wpm shorthand. There, I earned an award for the best news reporting score in the country.
An investigative journalist at heart, I have spent my career submitting FOIs and holding organisations to account. I also enjoy covering hard news, campaigns, court cases and breaking news.
I have a special interest in health reporting and the digital side of journalism – including SEO, social media management, video editing and infographics – and I am often seen as a digital leader in the newsroom.
I am self-taught in HTML and CSS coding, and while I was at university, the website I designed for our student newspaper won praise from one of the country’s top digital editors – Times Digital’s Nick Petrie.
“I was immediately struck by the strong use of photography and how the design balanced a good density of articles with white space. The designers and developers have clearly worked hard to build an experience to entice readers in. A strong selection of student-focused news stories demonstrates that this publication hasn’t forgotten its core purpose – to inform and delight its readers.”

I’ve worked with a number of publications – on regional, national and international news desks:
- The Guardian, national and international news
- The Independent, national and student news
- Cambridge News
- East Anglian Daily Times, Eastern Daily Press, Ipswich Star, Norwich Evening News
- Essex Live (Essex Chronicle and Brentwood Gazette)
- Bury Free Press and Newmarket Journal
Before I started working in news, I was a freelance magazine journalist and worked for the upmarket vintage fashion title, Vintage and One of a Kind.
